November is here! A month that invites us to reflect with gratitude. Yet, this November feels different, doesn't it? I’m inspired to share a story with you about how Ayn Rand’s epic book “Atlas Shrugged” changed my life. With the upcoming election just days away (in the US) and the world shifting before our eyes — AI innovations transforming every industry, societal structures undergoing rapid change, and new possibilities emerging — it’s natural to ask…

“What is my purpose in the midst of all that’s unfolding? What’s my unique contribution?”

These questions remind me of a story I’m inspired to share with you.

It was my freshman year of college. I had an eccentric Philosophy professor, Dr. Brown — imagine Einstein-like hair, with the passion to match. He wasn’t your typical professor. He would stand on desks to make a point! 

One day he assigned us a book to study that changed my life… Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged.

If you’re familiar with Atlas Shrugged, you know it’s not just a book. It’s a philosophy, a magnum opus that champions freedom, the sovereignty of the individual, and the power of self-determination (the right and ability we each have to make our own choices and control our own lives, free from external control or influence).

It tells the story of innovators, creators, and producers who refuse to be controlled by a system that doesn’t value their unique gifts, while exploring the questions: 

What would happen if the producers and innovators of the world were so burdened by laws and regulations that they stopped creating and contributing altogether? 

What would the world look like if the people who drive progress withdrew?

The narrative in Atlas Shrugged resonates with our growing concerns around freedom. 

It challenges us to consider…will we, as creators and changemakers, allow our sovereignty and freedom to be compromised? Or, will we stand, rooted in purpose, honoring our freedom to create, contribute, and live fully and freely?

We are each part of a larger puzzle, with a unique piece that only we can bring to the table.
